2019 Book Sale - January 24th to 27th

Thousands of books to choose from

2018 BOOK SALE RECAP

OVER 50,000 BOOKS! That's how many books were for sale at the 2018 annual Friends of the Hockessin Library (FOHL) Used Book Sale held January 25th through the 28th. Hundreds of eager buyers filled Memorial Hall to participate in one of the East Coast's largest and best used book sales.

Thursday night was for FOHL members only, and set an all-time high for opening night sales. Patrons, including local and out-of-state book dealers, started lining up at 8:00 a.m. in order to be among the first to peruse the offerings when the doors opened at 5:00 p.m. The sale opened to the public on Friday morning, and again many readers and collectors were in line when the doors opened at 9:00 a.m. Sunday, the final day of the sale, featured our $8 bag of books sale that was also enthusiastically attended.

MANY THANKS to our patrons. Sales for the event totaled more than $44,000. All profits from the sale are used to support the Hockessin Public Library. In 2017, some of the Library projects supported were prizes and supplies for both the Children's and Adult's Summer Reading Programs, the purchase of books, magazines and new furniture, staff professional organization dues, a staff Holiday lunch, maintenance of the Reading Garden, and an art display system for the Community Room.

KUDOS to the more than 100 volunteers who made this event possible. Some collected and sorted books all year, while others helped set up the sale, served as cashiers, kept things in order during the sale, and helped clean up when the sale ended at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. At 3:01 p.m. volunteers boxed up unsold books to be donated to the VA Hospital, local nursing homes and various children's charities, and joined a crew from Discover Books, LLC to ready the remaining books for redistribution and recycling. Then they stacked the tables and stored supplies for next year. This year was the quickest cleanup ever, with everything done in just one hour!

YOU CAN HELP support the 2019 book sale by volunteering your time and donating collectable and gently used books, DVDs, CDs,; puzzles and games for resale. Bring your donations on the second Saturday of the month from 9:00 a.m. to noon to the shed in the lot across the street from the Hockessin Fire Co. on Old Wilmington Road. Donation receipts are available. But please no encyclopedias, old textbooks or periodicals. They do not sell.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS for next year's sale - Thursday, January 24 through Sunday, January 27, 2019. We look forward to seeing you there!
